No Clear Path: Disabled People and the Barriers to Fair Work.
UK welfare reforms risk harming disabled people by increasing poverty, worsening health, and reducing independence. Our report, based on lived experience, shows that cuts and underfunded support do not remove barriers to work they create them. Disabled people tell us the main barriers to fair work are discrimination, inaccessible workplaces, lack of flexibility, and delays or gaps in support, not a lack of willingness or ability to work.
We strongly oppose the UK Government’s proposed changes to Personal Independence Payment (PIP) and Universal Credit in the Pathways to Work Green Paper. These changes risk increasing poverty and inequality and pushing more disabled people into poor health. Disabled people in our research report fear of financial loss, lack of trust in the system, difficult assessment processes, and stigma. They are calling for fair and co-produced reform that is based on dignity and respect. Welfare policy must be developed with disabled people, not for them, and must recognise that proper support is a matter of rights and is essential for a fairer society.
