Everyone misses out when disabled people are excluded from the workplace – Reporting Scotland

By admin | Blogs, Employability and Civic Participation, News | Comments are Closed | 6 March, 2018 | 0

We were featured on Reporting Scotland with two of our members who are looking for work. Despite being qualified and having lots of skills, they are coming up against barriers in the recruitment process. Dr Julie McElroy is a law graduate and has applied for hundreds of jobs. Julie recently spoke at our Summit on employment issues and gave an account of her experiences with job searching. Fiona Stewart is currently doing a parliamentary internship through the National Disability Internship Programme, hosted by her local MSP Oliver Mundell.

As Employability Officer, I work with employers to create opportunities for disabled people to get a valuable piece of work experience while the employer learns more about inclusive recruitment and in work support. We meet lots of people who are in this situation, and employers are always commenting on how great the applications for the internships are. I also have experience of being a disabled graduate and trying to start a career after set backs, so it was nice to take part in this interview.

Inclusion Scotland would like to thank Ian Hamilton for raising awareness of this important issue and promoting equality for disabled people in work.
