Due to the COVID -19 pandemic, Scottish Government staff are currently working from home. As the situation changes and guidance is updated, it may be possible to work some days in the Glasgow office.

The successful candidate must be willing to either travel using their own transport, or via public transport. Organisation profile: The devolved government for Scotland has a range of responsibilities which include: health, education, justice, rural affairs, housing and the environment. Since 2018, the Scottish Government has also gained responsibility for the delivery of some social security benefits. To help design the system of social security in Scotland, the Scottish Government set up the Social Security Experience Panels. The Experience Panels are made up of people who have experience of at least one of the benefits that will be part of the social security system in Scotland. Panel members take part in research activities that help create and inform Scotland’s social security system. You can find out more about the Experience Panels in the link below.
In 2020, a new team began work to form Client Panels, made up of individuals across Scotland who have applied for or received payment from Social Security Scotland. Client Panel members have volunteered to take part in ongoing research projects which will help design and improve the social security system in Scotland. The Client Panels research will mirror the Experience Panels approach but with a focus on improvement rather than design.
The team includes social researchers and staff who work on communication with panel members, managing spreadsheets, and finance processes.
The purpose of the internship will be to support the social security research team based in the Scottish Government and Social Security Scotland.
The intern will work with a team of social researchers in their research with Client and Experience Panels members. This will involve tasks such as using finance processes on behalf of the team and managing research and panel member Excel datasets including data input and keeping spreadsheets up to date. The intern will also be involved in assisting with arranging research, taking notes in research interviews and proof reading research reports.
You will have the opportunity to apply and develop a wide range of team working, administrative, and data handling skills. The role will involve liaising with analysts such as social researchers, user researchers and statisticians, and other social security colleagues such as policy officers and service designers, as well as the panel members.
This is a great opportunity to gain office experience in an analytical team.
Main duties and tasks
Essential skills and experience:
This role will involve most or all of the following:
- Helping to set up and run processes for the Client and Experience Panels programme of research, ensuring data protection rules are adhered to. For example, maintaining accurate records of participation in research activities.
- Responsibility for managing finance processes for the Analysis & Insights Team.
- Support research carried out by research leads by managing Excel datasets including data input and accurately recording updates. For example, managing panel registration data and maintaining up-to-date records of members contact details.
- Other research support tasks including proofreading surveys, helping set up interviews, taking notes of sessions.
No specific qualifications are required for this role but a good standard of English and numeracy is essential.
You should demonstrate the following in your application:
- Experience of using Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook to produce written work that is clear, concise and accurate.
- Good data handling skills and ability to work with numbers.
- Good attention to detail and ability to follow processes precisely.
- Good planning and organisational skills including ability to balance different projects and prioritise workload.
- Good interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively and flexibly as a member of a team.

- Must define as Deaf or disabled which includes physical, sensory and mental impairments, autistic spectrum, learning disabilities, learning difficulties such as dyslexia or long-term health conditions.
