My name is Annamaria De Felice, I am 30 years old and I have currently completed an Internship as Marketing Assistant in Open Secret. I would like to share my experience with this blog.
I am originally from Italy where I studied communication and journalism and I worked in several press agencies lastly with CGIL (Trade Union). I decided to move to Glasgow, I have been living in Glasgow for seven months and was actively looking for a change in my life. I secured a flat, started work in and enrolled in an English Course. I started to build a new life with my partner, new friends and the community, starting over is never easy but I learned that if you want, you can do it!
I started to look at my long term goals and what career I would like to gain, I enjoyed my role as Press Officer in Italy, I wanted to use my skills within an organisation so started to research a career in Social Media and Web design field. I started to research internships in Scotland; I found an opportunity with Open Secret as Marketing Assistant. I knew this position was ideal for me because I have a good knowledge about Social Media Management and Websites.
My role involved working with a team of people (fundraising team, administration team, volunteers), which was based in the fundraising team. The purpose was to create a communication strategy based on updating contents, scheduled messages, a new use of the social media, a change of the website, the completion of Open Secret’s Google Pages.
The organisation was aware of my disability, a cardiac malformation, but was flexible and accommodating. I was fully committed to the job; I was traveling from Glasgow to Falkirk on public transport which would take up to 3 hours. With my health condition, I decided to work 3 days instead of 5. The organisation allowed me to lower my days and work from home also.
Within the organisation, they value people’s wellbeing. As it is a non-profit organisation, they concentrate on the clients and workers being the centre of their action. I had direct contact with the supervisor of my project and she helped and supported me when I had doubts or difficulties. It is a functional organisation: while helping Open Secret with their website, I was able to build my knowledge of social media and SEO strategy. I also attended two free courses during my internship to learn more.
Another positive factor is my personal and professional growth, living in a different environment, learning and understanding Scottish people. It is a good way to see the world and increase my prospects and opportunities. I think that every person has a personal view about a job, environment and life’s opportunities, but I’m sure that there is just one word to describe when you find a right place: my home. Now Scotland is my home, Scottish people are my new family and every occasion I will find, it will represent another step on my way.
